I will lift up my eyes.
There is a Psalm that is close to my heart…. Psalm 121:1,2.
I will lift up my eyes unto the hills. From whence cometh my help? My help cometh from the Lord who made the heavens and earth.
I grew up hearing this Psalm in Spanish and the ring to it is so much more beautiful (and informed)…. Alzare mis ojos a los montes. De donde vendra mi socorro? Mi socorro viene de Jehova, que hizo los cielos y la tierra.
As I ponder this Psalm I am struck with the care of God. In Spanish Socorro is “rescue”. The idea is not that I need help to get something done… not “I need a hand with something”. It is more like, “I am sinking, adrift and I need a rescue party or I am going to perish”! When you need to be rescued (and “help” ain’t gonna cut it) God is where you need turn. You turn, if you are wise, to the Maker of Heaven and Earth. To turn to self, one’s strength, the promise of others, or to turn to chance…. foolishness. I love, too, the assurance in the Psalmist’ pen: “my rescue comes from the Lord”. And praise to Him, it always does. He is always there never to leave and never to forsake. It may not seem like it, but it is in His nature. He by definition is a Saviour.
The key seems to be in the posture we have… the mindset. In difficult times it is a good reminder to look up. Don’t look down. Don’t look back. Don’t close your eyes and try to forget… or wish upon a star. Don’t look over the hill for greener pastures. Look up! Look to Him! Rest in His promises. He, the Saviour, Creator, Rescuer and Friend brings relief in His perfect time.

My favorite Psalm…Every time I would feel lonely and so far away from all I knew, I would recite this psalm. It has always comforted me to know that He is my rescuer, the shadow to my right arm, the keeper of my soul that never sleeps or rest…So every time I recite this song, I think of the hills of home, of all my loved ones… and I praise him for loving me and for letting me know that I’m not alone, BUT with the one that created the Heavens and Earth.
